2011 Australian Baby Bonus News Site.

Are you better receiving the Australian Baby Bonus or do you get a better financial result with the Paid Parental Scheme. It can be complicated, see below for details.

How is the Baby Bonus paid?

The baby bonus will be cut from $5400 to $5000 from September 2012, and frozen at that level for a further three years, until then the Baby Bonus is paid per eligible child in 13 fortnightly instalments. From 1 July 2011, customers eligible to receive Baby Bonus will get a higher first instalment of $879.77 and 12 fortnightly instalments of approximately $379.77. The higher first instalment of Baby Bonus will assist with the upfront costs of having a new child.

Default Returning Australian Citizen

Hello,
I am an Australian citizen who has been living in London for the past 6 years (and still here). I was wondering if I would need to be living back in Australia for a minimum time before having the baby, to be able to claim the baby bonus?

Or if no previous time is required, could I have the baby in England, move to Australia with baby within a few months and still claim for bonus?

Thanks in advance, would really appreciate the info!

From my understanding a claimant meets the Australian residency requirements if the claimant has legal residence status and is living in Australia on a permanent basis. Eligibility may be maintained during a temporary absence from Australia for up to three years. Therefore currently you would not be eligible as you have been outside Oz for more than 3 years. You need to meet the criteria within 13 weeks of your babys birth. Therefore (my understanding, although i would check with Family Assistance office), provided you are back in Oz within 13 weeks of your childs birth and meet the criteria, ie you resume residency you should be eligible. Hope this helps.
